Discovering Nootropics Through Personal Experience

David Tomen had no idea where his life journey would eventually take him.

“I came out of university with a business degree. And I ended up working as an executive in various corporations around the world,” Tomen told us. “And every year during my performance review, my bosses used to say: ‘David, you’re a fantastic manager, you’re a great executive, you’re a good salesperson and people love working with you. But you have to learn how to focus.’ ”

Initially, Tomen saw his inability to focus as a moral failing. Determined to overcome it, tried to address it by reading books and trying different techniques to boost his concentration. It was only when his wife took him to see a specialist that the root of his issue became apparent: He was diagnosed with adult ADD and prescribed stimulants.

“The very first day that I took Ritalin, it was like somebody turned the lights on in my brain,” he recalls. “It was an absolute miracle. For the first time in my adult life, I could focus.”

However, over the course of a few years, Tomen, like many others, felt the effects of the treatment wane: He was growing tolerant to his prescription. That was when he first started to discover supplements.

“I had to figure out what was going on and how to see if I could fix this. There were no websites or books on this back then. I was reading clinical studies on PubMed.”

This approach paid off. It was through reading these medical studies, and adjusting the combination of supplements, that Tomen was able to increase the effectiveness of his prescription once again.

Years later, when he faced severe memory loss caused by hypothyroidism, nootropics were once again his saving grace.

Turning to Writing to Help Others

Fighting hypothyroidism became the springboard to a change in direction in his life.

“It took me two years of adding to my supplement stack, but I managed to get my memory back,” Tomen recalls. “I was back to reading clinical studies, learning about how memory worked in the human brain.”

While suffering from the numerous symptoms of hypothyroidism – from intense fatigue to thermoregulation issues – Tomen had been unable to work.

When he started to recover from his memory issues, he made a fresh start as a copywriter. Faced with the challenge of choosing a niche, he picked for nootropics – a subject he knew in-depth and that he was passionate about.

Tomen does profiles of individual nootropics as well as supplements and stacks that may be useful for particular cases.

While researching for his work, though, he realized that there were simply no easily available information sources out there about the supplements that had so fundamentally helped him.

“I was just reading PubMed and I figured if this is such a big challenge for me, finding out what supplements work for different things, it’s the same for other people. So I started a website, writing about what I found out about these supplements.”

That was the start of Nootropicsexpert.com, Tomen’s online hub, which has since become the prime source of information on supplements for brain health.

“I just kept writing,” Tomen says. “And the website climbed up in search results. Heaps of people were finding me and coming to me for information if they had problems with ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD, traumatic brain injuries, or PTSD.”

Tomen also turned his extensive research into an award-winning book, Head First. One of the most effective ways he has discovered to share his knowledge, though, is his YouTube channel.

That wasn’t what he’d had in mind launching it, though.

Launching on YouTube to Boost his Visibility

At the start, his goals for the channel were pretty modest.

“A couple of years after I launched the website, I decided that I was going to start a YouTube channel. I didn’t know anything about it, but I figured that if I created a video based on what I was writing on the website, I would get a link back to it and improve my search rankings,” Tomen explains.

“That was true – it worked. Except then the YouTube channel took off!”

With over 150,000 subscribers, Tomen’s channel is now one of the most popular in the niche. It has massively extended his reach and made it easier to find both his website and his book.

Most of all, it has helped people access the information they need to improve their brain health.

“The most gratifying thing is, when somebody says: ‘David, you changed my life.’,” Tomen says. “Every once in a while, somebody would even say: ‘You’ve saved my life.’ That’s the most humbling thing that you can possibly hear. In moments like that, I just don’t know what to say. It was my intention to provide this information so people could help themselves. And it turns out that it’s helping a lot of people all over the world.”

What’s next?

What other projects are on the horizon for Tomen?

Recently, he has started to delegate parts of his YouTube work, including channel management and video editing. “That way, I can focus on writing. It’s what I do best,” he explains.

Plus, he is working on launching a platform that will allow his followers to interact more with each other and share their experiences. This, he says, is based on audience demand.

“There are threads of comments on every video that I have on the YouTube channel and every page and post on the website. It’s a very active community. That’s one of the reasons why I want to start just a separate forum where people can get together and talk to each other – and help each other.”

As for Tomen himself, he is as passionate about nootropics research as ever: “There’s so much new science coming out every day. I can actually update articles that I wrote back in 2017 because there’s new studies coming out now!”
