Sounds perfect?

Don’t fall for it.

“Unlimited” video editing subscriptions are a trap countless creators fall into. And in which they end up losing massive amounts of cash.

Here’s why – and how to get truly unlimited video editing.

  • However, these orders will only get edited one after the other.

Video Editing Subscriptions - What They Promise

Unlimited video editing subscriptions look attractive. They promise to cover all of your video editing needs in return for a flat monthly rate. Easy to budget. A breeze to coordinate.

Which services are included varies between different companies. Most include both short-form and long-form video editing in their subscription, as well as unlimited revisions. Some throw in thumbnail design as well.

If you’re just getting started outsourcing your video editing and are looking for a no-headache solution, this seems like a perfect fit.

However, there’s a major catch – unlimited video editing subscriptions are not actually unlimited. If you fall for this lie, you could end up losing massive amounts of money.

The “Unlimited” Video Editing Trap

The catch is in the fine print. While “unlimited” video editing services allow you to submit as many video editing requests as you like every month, they’ll only get edited one after the other.

The catch is in the fine print.

In practice, this means that video editing subscriptions actually put a very real cap on your video output.

Here’s a disclaimer we actually found on one of these service’s pricing pages:

Important Disclaimer About Output* UNLIMITED refers to unlimited video requests, footage duration, and revisions — not unlimited finished videos. Our service operates on a continuous editing model, completing one delivery at a time in the order your queue is received. While we provide average output estimates based on typical client usage, your actual results may vary. […] As such, your monthly output may be lower than the estimate if your edits are more intricate or go through multiple rounds of revisions. Rest assured, our team will keep editing your queue without interruption as long as your membership remains active. […] SAME EDITOR FOR ALL PROJECTS.

Say you opt for a mid-range subscription plan at $1,500 per month (billed annually, naturally). (Want a realistic breakdown of pricing? Check out our overview of the best video editing services of the year!)

The service you picked offers two-day turnaround times and 24-hour unlimited revisions. They work Monday through Friday. All fairly standard. We’re not even getting into time zone troubles here! (Also: Heads-up! Some services actually note in their fine print that their turnaround times are estimates.

You put your editing request in on a Friday afternoon, just after you finished shooting your raw footage for the day and organised it properly. It starts getting processed Monday morning, you have a draft by Wednesday evening. You get a notification to review and see it Thursday morning, leave notes because you need some serious fine-tuning. Your video editor gets back to you Friday afternoon.

A week has passed and you’re still only on your second draft – which STILL needs work. And which you won’t get back before Monday evening at the latest.

Rinse and repeat.

In practice, this means that your video output is limited to 3-4 videos per month. A bit more if it’s mostly shorts.

You want to have more videos edited – for instance because you’re planning to batch-produce content? Tough luck.

You’re taking a break and need fewer edits? You’re still paying the full subscription.

The bottom line? Unless you have an incredibly regular, low-frequency video production rhythm, video editing subscriptions will end up losing you money.
